Be One - Make One: Study 4
Be One, Make One – Class 04: Small Group Discipleship Study – Becoming a Disciple of Jesus
Class Objective:
In this session, we will explore three key marks of a disciple:
Being on Mission with Jesus – Actively spreading the Gospel and sharing the message of salvation.
Leading by Example – Living out the Gospel through our actions, love, and integrity.
Helping Others Grow in Christ – Equipping others to mature in their faith and disciple others.
We will facilitate group discussion and personal reflection on how to live out these discipleship aspects practically and biblically.
Part 1: A Disciple is on Mission with Jesus (Evangelism and Outreach)
Overview:
A disciple actively spreads the Gospel and makes other disciples. Jesus’ Great Commission calls us to share the message of salvation. Our lives should point others to Christ, living as "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14-16). As disciples, we are called to preach the Gospel and engage in outreach.
Key Scripture References:
Matthew 28:19: "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Mark 16:15: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."
Romans 10:14: "How can they call on the one they have not believed in?"
Discussion Questions:
What does it mean to be on mission with Jesus in your everyday life?
How can we practically share the Gospel with others?
Why is it important to reflect Jesus as "light" in the world?
Application:
Identify someone in your life who needs the Gospel. Pray for them and look for an opportunity to share the good news.
Practice sharing your testimony with a friend and get feedback on improving your Gospel message.
Part 2: A Disciple Leads by Example (Living Out the Gospel)
Overview:
Discipleship is about living out God’s Word so others see Christ in us. A disciple’s life should be marked by love, integrity, and holiness. Jesus called us to be known by our love for one another, and we are to lead by example, showing others what it means to follow Christ.
Key Scripture References:
1 Corinthians 11:1: "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."
1 Timothy 3:2: "The overseer is to be above reproach, temperate, self-controlled..."
John 13:34-35: "Love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples."
Discussion Questions:
How does living out the Gospel serve as a witness to others?
What does it mean to live "above reproach"?
How can we show Christlike love in our relationships?
Application:
Reflect on an area in your life where you need to improve as a disciple. Share it with the group for accountability.
Demonstrate Christlike love this week in one relationship or situation.
Part 3: A Disciple Helps Others Grow to Maturity in Christ (Multiplication and Discipleship)
Overview:
A disciple’s responsibility includes helping others grow in Christ. This involves teaching them to obey Christ’s commands and equipping them to disciple others. Discipleship is about multiplication, where we invest in others' spiritual growth and help them mature in their faith.
Key Scripture References:
Matthew 28:20: "Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."
2 Timothy 2:2: "Entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."
Ephesians 4:11-13: "To equip his people...so that the body of Christ may be built up."
Discussion Questions:
Why is investing in others’ spiritual growth important?
How can we be intentional about guiding others in their walk with Christ?
What does spiritual maturity look like?
Application:
Identify someone you can help grow in faith. Commit to praying for them and finding ways to invest in their spiritual development.
Discuss as a group ways to help others grow spiritually within your community.
Closing Discussion:
What stood out to you most about being on mission, leading by example, and helping others grow to maturity?
How do these three aspects of discipleship combine to define following Jesus?
Closing Application:
This week, focus on applying one element from each category: On Mission, Leading by Example, and Helping Others Grow. Be ready to share your experience in the next group meeting.
Next Steps:
In upcoming sessions, we will explore each aspect of discipleship—Mission, Example, and Multiplication—in depth, learning how to make them integral to our daily walk with Christ.
This structure encourages biblical reflection on discipleship with practical applications for daily life.
