God Will Complete It: Finding Confidence in God’s Ongoing Work

We’ve started a new journey through the book of Philippians, and the series is called “Rejoice Always.”

Last time, we looked at the power of thankfulness. This week, we’re anchoring ourselves in confidence—not in ourselves, but in the God who finishes what He starts.

Philippians 1:4–6 (NKJV)

“Always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

These words are rich with encouragement, especially when you’re feeling stuck, discouraged, or unfinished.

Let’s explore this powerful truth: God will complete it.

1. Starting Is Easy — Finishing Is the Hard Part

We’ve all experienced it.

Starting a diet, a workout plan, a course… maybe even a ministry or relationship. The start feels exciting, fresh, full of potential.

But what about the middle? What about the long, slow stretch between “God began” and “It is finished”?

Many start strong. But finishing takes character, discipline, and perseverance.

Luke 14:28–30 — “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost… lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish…”

Ecclesiastes 7:8 — “The end of a thing is better than its beginning; the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

In other words, starting doesn’t make you special—finishing does.

You can look back at photos, church events, youth services, and remember people who started strong in the faith.

But where are they now?

This isn’t about condemnation. It’s about honesty. The truth is: anyone can start, but God calls us to finish.

2. Remember Who Began the Work

Here’s the key:

“He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…”

We’re not relying on our ability to finish. We’re relying on God’s commitment to finish what He started.

God is a finisher.

Isaiah 40:28 — “The everlasting God, the Lord… neither faints nor is weary…”

God doesn’t get tired. He doesn’t give up. He never leaves things half-done.

Jesus didn’t stop halfway on the cross. He said:

“It is finished.” (John 19:30)

The greatest work—salvation—was completed.

So if He didn’t leave the cross unfinished, He’s not going to leave you unfinished either.

Yes, there’s often a gap between the beginning and the end.

In that gap, you may feel disappointed, frustrated, or discouraged—but know this:

God is not finished.

He will take you all the way.

3. Keep the Confidence

Paul says:

“Being confident of this very thing…”

Notice: his confidence isn’t in the Philippians’ progress. It’s in God’s promise.

Our confidence doesn’t come from our track record or our feelings. It comes from:

  • His Word

  • His promises

  • His finished work on the cross

2 Timothy 1:12 — “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him…”

This is the kind of unshakable faith that holds on when things look unfinished.

When you see broken areas in your life…

When your prayers feel unanswered…

When marriages, ministries, or dreams seem stalled…

Don’t give up.

Say it to yourself:

“God will finish it. If He began it, He will finish it.”

Hebrews 10:35 — “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward.”

Conclusion: What God Starts, He Finishes

Let your faith fuel your confidence.

God’s not finished with your story. Not with your family. Not with your calling.

He didn’t bring you this far to leave you here.

If He began a good work in you, He will complete it.

So hold on. Keep trusting. Keep rejoicing.

The One who started it will finish it—because He is faithful.
