Becoming Qualified for Ministry — A Teachable, Humble and Set-Apart Heart

Introduction

Ministry qualification starts with character, not just ability. Humility, teachability and a life above reproach matter more than gifting.

Study objective

Purpose: To understand the character that qualifies someone for ministry — humility, teachability and living above reproach.

Section 01

WHAT QUALIFIES SOMEONE FOR MINISTRY?

Humility: willing to be guided and corrected.

Teachability: open to learning and growing.

Living above reproach: living in a way that sets an example and does not bring shame to the gospel.

Key scriptures

1 Timothy 3:2

“Now the overseer is to be above reproach…”

Titus 1:7–8

Leaders must not be worldly but self-controlled, upright and holy.

Proverbs 12:1

Loving correction is a sign of wisdom.

Philippians 2:3–4

Valuing others above ourselves.

Section 02

TEACHABILITY AND HUMILITY

Ministry requires people willing to receive encouragement, correction or direction from leaders.

It requires submitting personal preferences for the sake of the team's unity and the church's vision.

Feedback — or even being asked to step back temporarily — does not affect your salvation. Being corrected is not rejection; it's part of growing as a disciple.

Key scriptures

Hebrews 13:17

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls…”

Section 03

LIVING ABOVE REPROACH

Ministry is a visible calling. How you live inside and outside the church matters.

The Bible warns about worldliness — copying the behaviours, attitudes and values of those outside Christ.

We ask all who join ministry to guard their personal testimony, live in a way that reflects Jesus both publicly and privately, and understand that certain standards in speech, conduct and appearance help maintain unity and example.

Key scriptures

1 John 2:15–17

“Do not love the world or anything in the world…”

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world…”

2 Corinthians 6:17

“Come out from among them and be separate…”

Section 04

SELF-REFLECTION AND LEADER CONVERSATION

Discussion questions

  1. 01Are you willing to receive correction or guidance in love?
  2. 02Can you handle being redirected without seeing it as personal rejection?
  3. 03Are you committed to living above reproach both inside and outside of church life?
  4. 04Are there any habits or worldly patterns you're struggling with that could affect your role in ministry?

Closing discussion

  • Being part of a ministry team is not about earning your salvation — your salvation is by grace.
  • Ministry is about serving Jesus well, together, as His representatives.
  • Stay humble, stay teachable, and keep growing in Christlikeness.
