Be One, Make One – Part 11 A Disciple Is on Mission with Jesus (Evangelism and Outreach)

INTRODUCTION

Jesus never called His followers “Christians.” He called them disciples—learners, followers, and imitators of His way of life. Today, that calling has not changed. To follow Jesus is to live on mission with Him, proclaiming His Gospel and demonstrating His love in a broken world.

Being a disciple isn’t about title or prestige—it’s about transformation, purpose, and obedience. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we’re not only saved—we’re sent. This study explores what it really means to be a disciple who makes disciples.

PART 1: JESUS CALLS US TO BE DISCIPLES—NOT JUST BELIEVERS

Overview:

The term “Christian” is only used a few times in the Bible, but the word disciple appears over 250 times. Jesus didn’t simply call people to believe—He called them to follow. A disciple is someone whose identity, choices, and mission are shaped by Jesus Himself.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 4:19 – “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Luke 14:27 – “Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

Acts 11:26 – “…The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

What Is the Text Saying?

Matthew 4:19 – Jesus invites us to follow Him with the clear goal of becoming disciple-makers.

Luke 14:27 – Discipleship is costly—it requires surrender and obedience.

Acts 11:26 – “Christian” was a label given to disciples; discipleship is the root of our identity.

Discussion Questions:

• What’s the difference between being a believer and being a disciple?

• Why do you think Jesus emphasized following more than just believing?

• How is your current walk with Christ shaped by the mindset of a true disciple?

PART 2: A DISCIPLE IS ON MISSION WITH JESUS

Overview:

A true disciple joins Jesus in His mission—to seek and save the lost. Evangelism is not just for the “gifted”—it’s for all who follow Jesus. Every disciple is sent. This mission involves our words, our actions, and our availability to the Holy Spirit to reach others with love and truth.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 28:19-20 – “Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

Mark 16:15 – “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”

Romans 10:14 – “How can they believe… unless someone tells them?”

What Is the Text Saying?

Matthew 28:19-20 – Jesus’ final command is to make disciples—not just converts.

Mark 16:15 – The Gospel is for all people, and it’s our responsibility to share it.

Romans 10:14 – Faith comes through hearing—we must open our mouths.

Discussion Questions:

• What does it look like to live “on mission” in your everyday life?

• Where do you feel hesitant or unprepared to share your faith?

• How can you trust the Holy Spirit more as you step out in evangelism?

PART 3: A DISCIPLE LIVES BY EXAMPLE—NOT JUST BY TITLE

Overview:

The mission of Jesus isn’t just preached—it’s demonstrated. Disciples are examples of what life in Christ looks like. Sadly, many want the identity of being a disciple without the responsibility of living like one.

Discipleship is about example-ship. People don’t follow what we say—they follow who we are. If we are to make disciples, we must ask: Am I the kind of person others should follow? Am I living out what I’ve learned about loving God and loving people?

Key Scriptures:

1 Corinthians 11:1 – “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”

Philippians 3:17 – “Join together in following my example… as you have us as a model.”

1 Timothy 4:12 – “Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Titus 2:7-8 – “In everything set them an example… by doing what is good.”

Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light shine before others… that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

What Is the Text Saying?

1 Corinthians 11:1 & Philippians 3:17 – Paul calls believers to lead through visible example.

1 Timothy 4:12 – Even young believers are expected to model godliness.

Titus 2:7-8 – Sound teaching must be matched with a godly lifestyle.

Matthew 5:16 – Our lives are a testimony—good deeds bring glory to God.

Deeper Reflection Questions:

• Is your life one others can imitate to grow in Christ?

• Have you been applying what you’ve learned about loving God and loving people—or just learning?

• In what areas do you need the Holy Spirit’s help to align your lifestyle with your calling?

Challenge Questions:

• Are you living for Christ behind closed doors, or only in public ministry?

• Are you ready to disciple someone else? Why or why not?

• What would someone learn about God by watching how you live?

CLOSING DISCUSSION:

• Which part of being a disciple challenged you the most—identity, mission, or example?

• How have the previous studies prepared you to live more like a true disciple?

• What specific changes do you need to make to become a disciple who multiplies?

CLOSING APPLICATION:

This week, let your faith become movement:

Follow – Ask Jesus where He wants you to grow in surrender and obedience.

Go – Look for one opportunity to share your faith or encourage someone spiritually.

Live – Identify one area of your lifestyle that needs to come in line with your message. Make the change this week with the Spirit’s help.

NEXT STEPS:

In the next session, we’ll explore what it means to multiply—how disciples not only grow personally but invest in others intentionally. We’ll talk about mentoring, spiritual reproduction, and building a legacy of faith.
