Be One, Make One – Part 1 Becoming a Disciple of Design: Loving God, Loving People, Making Disciples

INTRODUCTION

Becoming a disciple of Jesus begins with a simple but profound foundation: Loving God, Loving People, and Making Disciples.

This study will introduce you to these three essential aspects of following Jesus. Through Scripture, discussion, and practical steps, we’ll learn together how these truths shape our identity and purpose as Christ-followers.

STUDY OBJECTIVE

To explore and understand three foundational areas of discipleship:

1. Loving God

2. Loving People

3. Making Disciples

PART 1: LOVING GOD

Overview:

Loving God is the heart of our Christian faith. It’s more than feelings—it’s a life of prayer, worship, obedience, and trust. When we truly love God, our lives reflect that love through daily surrender.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 22:37“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

John 14:15“If you love me, keep my commands.”

Psalm 63:1“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you.”

What Is the Text Saying?

Reflect on each verse. What stands out to you?

Matthew 22:37: What does “all” mean in the context of heart, soul, and mind?

John 14:15: How does love relate to obedience?

Psalm 63:1: What does longing for God look like in real life?

Discussion Questions:

• What does it practically mean to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind?

• What challenges do you face in maintaining this devotion daily?

• How can we express love for God in our routines, decisions, and time?

PART 2: LOVING PEOPLE

Overview:

Loving others is the natural result of loving God. Jesus didn’t just love the easy-to-love—He loved everyone. We’re called to love with that same kind of unconditional, sacrificial love.

Key Scriptures:

John 13:34-35“As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

1 John 4:20“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.”

Philippians 2:3-4“In humility value others above yourselves…”

What Is the Text Saying?

John 13:34-35: What does it mean to love as Jesus loved?

1 John 4:20: What’s the connection between our love for God and love for others?

Philippians 2:3-4: How does humility affect our relationships?

Discussion Questions:

• What does loving people reveal about your relationship with God?

• Why is it hard to love people who have hurt or wronged us?

• How can you show love practically through kindness, forgiveness, or service?

PART 3: MAKING DISCIPLES

Overview:

Making disciples is more than sharing your faith—it’s helping others grow in their walk with Christ. It means being available, building relationships, and living in a way that inspires others to follow Jesus too.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 28:19-20“Go and make disciples of all nations…”

2 Timothy 2:2“Entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

Matthew 5:16“Let your light shine before others…”

What Is the Text Saying?

Matthew 28:19-20: What does it mean to “go”? Is this about location or lifestyle?

2 Timothy 2:2: What does it mean to pass on your faith?

Matthew 5:16: How do our actions point people to God?

Discussion Questions:

• What does making disciples mean to you personally?

• What holds you back from sharing your faith or mentoring others?

• How can you intentionally live out the call to make disciples this week?

CLOSING DISCUSSION

• Of the three areas—loving God, loving people, making disciples—which one stood out to you the most?

• Where do you feel most challenged right now?

• Where do you feel most encouraged?

• How do all three areas connect and support one another in a healthy Christian life?

APPLICATION CHALLENGE

This week, take one practical step in each area:

Loving God: Spend 10 minutes a day in prayer or worship.

Loving People: Show kindness to someone, especially someone difficult to love.

Making Disciples: Pray for someone you could reach out to, encourage, or walk with spiritually.

NEXT STEPS

This session is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, we’ll explore each of these three areas more deeply—looking at how to grow in intimacy with God, love others with purpose, and walk boldly in the mission of making disciples.

Stay connected. Stay consistent. Let’s grow together.
