Be One, Make One – Part 2 Loving God: Pursuing God, Obeying God, Serving with Humility
INTRODUCTION
In this session, we’ll explore three key expressions of Loving God:
1. Pursuing God – Actively seeking God through prayer, worship, and studying His Word.
2. Obeying God – Demonstrating our love by following His commands and glorifying Him in our daily lives.
3. Serving with Humility – Loving God through self-denial, service to others, and cultivating a heart of humility.
Through group discussion and personal reflection, we’ll see how these disciplines deepen our love for God and shape us into true disciples.
PART 1: PURSUING GOD, SEEKING HIM, AND HUNGERING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS
Overview:
Loving God starts with a personal pursuit of Him. This is shown through prayer, worship, and a desire to know His Word. As we seek God, our hearts grow in trust, holiness, and desire for righteousness.
We pursue Him because He first loved us with a love beyond comprehension.
Key Scriptures:
• Psalm 63:1 – “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you.”
• 1 Thessalonians 5:17 – “Pray continually.”
• 1 Peter 1:15-16 – “Be holy, because I am holy.”
What Is the Text Saying?
• Psalm 63:1 – Shows deep longing for God’s presence as the fuel for pursuit.
• 1 Thessalonians 5:17 – Highlights the importance of continuous communication with God.
• 1 Peter 1:15-16 – Calls us to mirror God’s holiness in every area of life.
Discussion Questions:
• What does it mean to actively pursue God in your daily life?
• Where do you find it difficult to consistently seek God through prayer, worship, and the Word?
• How can we grow in our hunger for righteousness and reflect God’s holiness?
PART 2: OBEDIENCE AND BRINGING GLORY TO GOD
Overview:
Obedience is the natural overflow of a heart that loves God. Every decision, relationship, and action should aim to glorify Him. True love for God is shown through joyful obedience—even when it’s challenging.
Just like Jesus, we obey not only out of duty but out of trust and devotion to the Father.
Key Scriptures:
• John 14:15 – “If you love me, keep my commands.”
• 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
• 1 John 4:20-21 – “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.”
What Is the Text Saying?
• John 14:15 – Love and obedience are inseparably connected.
• 1 Corinthians 10:31 – All of life is a stage for God’s glory.
• 1 John 4:20-21 – Loving others proves our love for God is genuine.
Discussion Questions:
• How does obedience demonstrate your love for God?
• In what everyday areas is it hardest to live for God’s glory?
• Why is loving others a crucial part of truly loving God?
PART 3: SACRIFICE, SERVICE, AND HUMILITY
Overview:
Following Jesus means surrendering self-interest for the sake of others. We serve with humility because Jesus served us first. Without spiritual humility, true service is impossible. We need God’s strength to lay down pride and put others first.
Key Scriptures:
• Luke 9:23 – “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily.”
• James 4:10 – “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”
• Colossians 3:15-17 – “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
What Is the Text Saying?
• Luke 9:23 – Calls for daily self-denial and surrender in discipleship.
• James 4:10 – Humility positions us to be lifted and strengthened by God.
• Colossians 3:15-17 – Reminds us that peace, gratitude, and humble service go hand-in-hand.
Discussion Questions:
• What does it mean for you to take up your cross daily?
• Where do you struggle to walk in humility and gratitude?
• How can you practice humble service in your relationships and community this week?
CLOSING DISCUSSION
• Which aspect—Pursuing God, Obeying God, Serving with Humility—resonated most with you?
• Where do you feel most challenged?
• How do these three aspects build on one another to deepen your love for God?
CLOSING APPLICATION
For this week, take one intentional step in each area:
• Pursue God: Dedicate time daily to prayer or worship, asking God to draw you closer.
• Obey God: Identify and commit to one specific area where you can live in obedience and glorify Him.
• Serve with Humility: Look for an opportunity to serve someone where it costs you something—your time, comfort, or pride.
Come ready next session to share how God worked through these actions.
