Becoming an Unstoppable Disciple with Unshakeable Faith
No matter what you're going through, you can be fulfilled by God. When something is going wrong, you need to look at your foundation!
Matthew 5:3–6 (NKJV)
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
Part One: Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”
Hunger and thirst signify a deep awareness of what is missing on the inside. We all know what it is to be hungry; no one has to teach us to be hungry. Hunger is a basic sign of life—newborn babies do not need to be taught to be hungry. Similarly, the sign of spiritual life is a new spiritual hunger for God.
Just as I had to be taught how to feed as a baby, but no one had to teach me how to be hungry, we can teach you how to feed yourself spiritually, but we cannot teach you to be hungry. Hunger is a sign of spiritual life, as we see in the Scriptures:
Psalm 63:1
"O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water."
Psalm 42:1-2
"As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?"
Psalm 107:9
"For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness."
When we follow God, there should be a hunger, a longing, and we should be driven.
Part Two: Blessed Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
When it comes to righteousness, we should not be content; we should be hungry. We should never get to the place where we think we have arrived or that we are okay now.
Luke 18:13-14
"And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
What Does It Mean to Hunger for Righteousness?
- Hunger for Justification and Sanctification
- To be made right with God through Jesus Christ and live right in the sight of God, becoming like Christ.
The problem is that many church people “like” righteousness, but they're not “hungry" for it. A lot of what Christians do today is seek spiritual experiences more than righteous manifestation. They like righteousness and agree with righteousness but are hungry for pleasure and happiness. We can see this when we look at their lifestyle:
- What some men like on social media: hungry for pleasure more than righteousness.
- What some women dress like: hunting for attention more than righteousness.
- What people watch on Netflix: for entertainment more than righteousness.
- How some people treat their spouse: for their own way more than righteousness.
The truth is, some of you are hungry for relationships, money, popularity, and comfort.
Hunger is a sign of health—something is wrong when there's no appetite for righteousness. Remember, when something is wrong, look at the foundation: poor spirit, mourning, meekness. God is not looking for perfection, but He is looking for hunger.
Part Three: God Is the Only One Who Can Satisfy the Soul of Mankind
Many people have not diagnosed soul hunger and have tried to fill it with money, relationships, position, and power. But in this text, Jesus guarantees fulfillment and satisfaction: “they shall be filled.”
Jeremiah 29:13
"And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."
Matthew 7:7-8
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”
Hunger gets us more Jesus, filled with the Spirit, and a deeper satisfaction—guaranteed.
Some of you today would admit, "I don't have it. How do I get it?"
1. Admit your lack of hunger to God and ask Him to make you hungry.
2. Surround yourself with people who are hungry and do what they do.
3. Remove the things that remove hunger.
When we pursue happiness, we miss righteousness and lose happiness. But when we hunger for righteousness, we find happiness and become righteous.
