Ministry Workshop: Session 2 Title: Becoming Qualified for Ministry — A Teachable, Humble, and Set-Apart Heart
1. What Qualifies Someone for Ministry?
Ministry qualification starts with character, not just ability.
Key Qualities:
• Humility: Willing to be guided and corrected.
• Teachability: Open to learning and growing.
• Living Above Reproach: Living in a way that sets an example and does not bring shame to the gospel.
Biblical Foundations:
• 1 Timothy 3:2 — “Now the overseer is to be above reproach…”
• Titus 1:7-8 — Leaders must not be worldly but self-controlled, upright, and holy.
• Proverbs 12:1 — Loving correction is a sign of wisdom.
• Philippians 2:3–4 — Valuing others above ourselves.
2. Teachability & Humility in Ministry
Ministry requires people willing to:
• Receive encouragement, correction, or direction from leaders.
• Submit personal preferences for the sake of the team’s unity and the church’s vision.
• Accept that feedback or even being asked to step back temporarily does not affect your salvation.
“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls…” — Hebrews 13:17
Being corrected is not rejection — it’s part of growing as a disciple.
3. Living Above Reproach: Separation from the World
Ministry is a visible calling.
• How you live inside and outside the church matters.
• The Bible warns about worldliness — copying the behaviors, attitudes, and values of those outside Christ.
Biblical Foundations:
• 1 John 2:15–17 — “Do not love the world or anything in the world…”
• Romans 12:2 — “Do not conform to the pattern of this world…”
• 2 Corinthians 6:17 — “Come out from among them and be separate…”
We ask all who join ministry to:
• Guard their personal testimony — avoiding behavior that would cause others to stumble.
• Live in a way that reflects Jesus both publicly and privately.
• Understand that certain standards in speech, conduct, and appearance help maintain unity and example.
4. Self-Reflection & Leader Conversation Questions
Leaders should ask ministry applicants:
• Are you willing to receive correction or guidance in love?
• Can you handle being redirected without seeing it as personal rejection?
• Are you committed to living above reproach both inside and outside of church life?
• Are there any habits or worldly patterns you’re struggling with that could affect your role in ministry?
5. Final Encouragement: Heart Over Title
• Being part of a ministry team is not about earning your salvation — your salvation is by grace.
• Ministry is about serving Jesus well, together, as His representatives.
• Stay humble, stay teachable, and keep growing in Christlikeness.
