Class Four: Kindness and Goodness
Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Kindness and Goodness in Dating
Kindness and goodness are two essential fruits of the Spirit that should be evident in a believer’s life. Kindness is the act of showing compassion and care towards others, while goodness is the quality of being virtuous and morally upright. Together, they reflect God’s love and righteousness.
1. Kindness: Compassion in Action
The Greek word for kindness in Galatians 5:22 is "chrestotes," which means gentleness and generosity. Kindness is expressed through love and concern for others in practical ways, without expecting anything in return.
"Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)
To cultivate kindness:
Extend grace and forgiveness to those who have wronged you.
Show respect and patience towards others.
Seek opportunities to serve and encourage those in need.
2. Goodness: Moral Excellence and Integrity
The Greek word for goodness in Galatians 5:22 is "agathosune," which refers to moral excellence, uprightness, and kindness in action. It is the active pursuit of doing what is right and reflecting God’s righteousness.
"Let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." (Galatians 6:9)
To cultivate goodness:
Live with integrity and righteousness.
Stand firm in doing what is right, even when unpopular.
Reflect God’s character in your actions and decisions.
Signs Someone Lacks Kindness and Goodness
Here are three key indicators that someone has not yet developed Spirit-led kindness and goodness:
Selfishness – Prioritizing personal interests over the needs of others.
Harshness – Quick to criticize and condemn rather than uplift and encourage.
Lack of Compassion – Indifference to the suffering of others and unwillingness to extend help.
Self-Examination: Do You Walk in Kindness and Goodness?
A deep soul-searching question to ask yourself:
Do I consistently show genuine care and concern for others, even when they don’t deserve it?
Consider:
Am I willing to extend mercy and forgiveness when it is difficult?
Do I seek ways to help and serve others selflessly?
Do I actively choose what is right and pleasing to God, even when challenging?
Pursuing Kindness and Goodness in Relationships
To cultivate Spirit-led kindness and goodness in dating:
Seek a partner who embodies these traits – Look for someone who extends kindness and lives with moral integrity.
Develop these qualities in yourself – Walk in daily surrender to God and reflect His character.
Pray for guidance – Trust that God’s wisdom will lead you to a Christ-centered relationship.
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:25)
