Gospel Study – Week 2: Why Do We Need to Be Saved?
Welcome Back!
Last week, we looked at what the Gospel is — the good news that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again, offering us the gift of salvation.
But this naturally leads to a big question…
Why do we even need to be saved?
That’s what this week is all about. Before we can fully appreciate what Jesus did for us, we have to understand our need for it. When we grasp the seriousness of sin and our separation from God, the gospel becomes not just good news — it becomes life-changing.
As you read and talk with your mentor this week, stay open and honest. This part of the journey might feel challenging, but it’s necessary — and incredibly freeing.
⸻
Purpose
To help you understand why we need the gospel — our sin, our separation from God, and the need for salvation through Jesus.
⸻
START HERE: Let’s Talk
• What comes to mind when you hear the word “sin”?
• Do you think most people are good or bad? Why?
• Why do you think we need to be “saved”? From what?
⸻
Let’s Go to the Bible
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
• Who has sinned?
• What does it mean to fall short of God’s glory?
⸻
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
• What do we earn because of sin?
• What is the difference between “wages” and a “gift”?
⸻
Isaiah 59:2
“Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you…”
• What separates us from God?
• How serious does this sound?
⸻
Ephesians 2:1–5 (Summary)
“You were dead in your sins… following the ways of this world… But God, being rich in mercy… made us alive with Christ…”
• What does it mean to be spiritually dead?
• What do you notice about God’s mercy in this passage?
⸻
Let’s Understand It
Key Truths from Scripture:
All people have sinned — no one is exempt
Sin separates us from God — it breaks our relationship with Him
Sin leads to death — not just physical, but spiritual separation from God
We can’t fix it by trying harder or doing good works
But God’s love made a way — He brings us back to life through Jesus
⸻
Let’s Talk Deeply
• According to the Bible, what is sin?
• How has sin affected your view of yourself or of God?
• What does it mean to be “spiritually dead”?
• Why is it good news that God made a way, even when we were dead in sin?
⸻
Wrap-Up Challenge
Before next time:
Take time to pray — Ask God to forgive your sins. Be real and honest.
Reflect: “Have I personally received God’s gift of salvation?”
Optional Reading: Ephesians 2:1–10 — read it slowly and think about what God has done.
⸻
Final Thoughts
This week might feel like holding a mirror up to your soul — seeing where things have gone wrong, realizing how far we’ve fallen. But it’s also where real hope begins.
God doesn’t point out our sin to shame us — He does it to rescue us.
The truth is: you’re not alone, and you’re not beyond saving. We’ve all fallen short. And yet, in His amazing love, God didn’t give up on us. He made a way through Jesus.
That’s what makes the gospel so beautiful: God loves you as you are, but He also loves you too much to leave you there. His love can restore, forgive, and give you a brand new life.
